"the cavities behind the coil are not the cavities where pressure passes"
Yes, but the speach coil and diphragm can "see" the air volumes behind the magnetic gap and will be loaded by the resonanses created, and the radiated s...
It is was not bad sound but the sound that clearly indicated that something is very wrong: supper compressed, complete absent of LF, huge HF extension. The whole horn sounds like a bad MD driver.
Open the back panels...

is the compression driver problem not solved by using multiple drivers all feeding into the same, relatively large throat, eg four 2.5 inch drivers into a 5 inch throat? The idea is that sensitivity to reactance will be much less at lower excursions,...

Robin, of course I meant to say above that the Heils are equivocal when pressed, and no reason for me to think a compression chamber mosh with another driver would improve this quality; but I am just guessing. It would certainly be interesting i...

I pulled a mono set of these exact looking horns out of a movie theater they were installed in 1946 :)the system consisted of 2 of these bass cabs and one gigantic dual compression driver horn on top for the entire theaterI am no horn guy and looking...

Sorry I misread, I thought you endorsed the use of PP tube amps with compression horn drivers. Well it looks like were still in the same situation of not making them work. I could go on about why I feel they don't work, but it won't chang...
The electricity comment is interesting as today I put on some jazz music and the HF is very snappy, excellent! I feel like posting on AA to ask people's opinons if it's the electricity or if my concrete horns are going thro...

If you ask me the compression drivers is like the jbl 2420/2470 design only with an other back chamber. And the low freq driver really makes me think of an old alnico driver of jbl 2220A http://www.lansingheritage.org/images/jbl/specs/pro-comp/2420/p...

Hi Chris, all Allthough most of the work is done by the compression driver at 5 K , I would still use a proper horn, a horn that loaded the driver down to 2500Hz would be minimum IMHO. You can still use a Le Cléac'h horn if you wish. ;) cheers ;)...
Well, the Cogent (Steve Schell and Rich Drysdale) boys are building just such a beast: field coil magnet, (possible) permendur polepieces for >2T, Fs 70Hz, throat - dunno, but at least 3" dia, reduced compression ratio relative t...

It seems every conductor has his/her own interpretation/feel of Bruckner. Here is one from last sunday, Bruckner 5.http://radio.omroep.nl/u/201446/?silverlight=The concert begins about 19 mins. into the program, don't be too much annoyed by the mp3-co...

A $$$ solution for a bass array that comes into my mind are the sandwich cone drivers from Accuton.Monstrous neodymium magnet, underhung voice coil (for low flux modulation).Very low Fs.Relatively low QMS for use in sealed enclosure with transconduct...

Ralph (Cessaro) is in the process of manufacturing his own compression drivers, I have no details as yet, I believe the diaphragms will be beryllium not made by TAD.Also new and ready for release ,although not shown at Munich are double skinned carb...

Some wrong oppinions here :) As a fan I studiet it very precise. I mean very down to each inch. The path length is 1.68 Meters, Throat 250 square centimeter (7.5x33), mouth 2x25 / 50 x 97 cm = 5000sqcmThat makes a compression of almost 4:1Gives a cuto...

over here. By now there's no HD FM and digital radio uses other frequencies. My pity is that I only have ONE good classical station, but it still puzzles me how it can sound so good. Probably it has to do with compression. Once they broadcasted a con...
Even though I do understand that advantages to run dedicated operation system but it do not automatically implies that the result will be better.
No, not automatically. But I believe using a minimalist open source op...
The best sound at the Show (to my ears, again) was in Hiraga/Melody room.
Hello Vuki!To my ears this speaker has a very smooth-sounding compression driver that hasn´t deserved being combined with a 15" cone ...

They have a 17cm throats so in most cases it is better to get the version with 2" throat for compression drivers, shorten them for the right throat size and build a chamber yourself....

I think it was Wagner who first incorporated in his composition the concept of masking. He felt that during loud sounds people are losing ability to recognize the instrumental complexity. Later on during the stupid mp3 times or digital compression, o...

Dear Romy,My speakers are semi active-I can turn of above 250 Hz- Do you think it's possible to just turn on bass, position them according to compression? Then fine tune by playing full range?Best regards, Armen...

For sure it is an interesting design. I do not know how they dealt Fostex compression and why they need to customize the tweeters that were made for them "by hands in Toking one by one". Would it be easier to induce the customization into the custom ...
ScottL,It looks like the two pics you posted are of different systems, the first being slot loaded PP, and the second (full-system) showing a "traditional" IB. You also seem to be confirming my intuitive hunch of potential sou...

Imaging is what you experience from a good mono recording, which is closer to reality in a live performance, but kind of narrower. Soundstage is what you get from most hifi systems, a quite false illusion of music happening into its own fake, de...

I just spoke with a guy who have made both permanent magnets and electro magnets for loudspeakers. He said that the reason that electro magnetic speakers have a smoother and more grain free sound, is due to the temperature rise in the mechanical parts...

John, I disagree.
No one deny the importance of harmonics and you are right saying that “If a speaker does not reproduce the harmonics correctly, then the tone is not reproduced correctly.” However you are talking about a complete speaker, not...

This time from Germany and this time the pattern is very much the similar to the patterns of any other company that sell electromagnet fro Hi-Fi: the semi-idiotic statements-claims meant to impress uninformed peoples and no credible claims about ...

They were playing some Schubert Lieder, Tchaikovsky and a very challenging George Crumb piece while I was in there. Was interested to see a gunmetal compression chamber on the rear of his new S2's.

Angelo ,Romy is right .Forget about him and his advices. Go to the mountains and find your inner truth....:0)For years he's drooling that S2 although not perfect is the most interesting compression driver and now when there is the chance that this dr...

Well, a lot of horns are put into box enclosures of course. This is really a complicated subject. The baffle must be dealt with in a manner similarly for all loudspeakers so designed of course. More interestingly is the potential fo...

I wonder if anyone recognizes the drivers of the Cessaro Horn Acoustics? I thought that I know all of them but looking at Cessaro’s compression driver I have no idea what it is and I feel that my ego severally hurts. The pictures on the Cessaro site ...
